PROF Charles Ayo, Vice-Chancellor of Trinity University, Yaba, Lagos State, says only increased funding of the education sector will bring about the desired growth and sustainable development of the country.

Ayo said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ota, Ogun.

According to him, there can’t be any meaningful development in the country without taking education seriously.

The don, also a former, VC of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun, attributed the nation’s current security challenge to the neglect of the education sector.

“A nation that neglects or does not place priority on education through human capital development would find it difficult to achieve desired sustainable national development.

“The federal government needs to place more priority on education by allocating more funds to it to enable it to achieve the desired level of economic development like developed countries such as the U.S and Britain,” he said.

The don noted that the only way any nation could achieve development in all spheres, as well as technological advancement was through massive investment in education.

He said the old Western region achieved meaningful success and development in the education sector through the massive investment of between 40 percent to 50 percent of its revenue in the sector.

He explained that with the required investment, “miscreants across our various states nationwide, who engage in social vices could become useful to themselves and  humanity if they become properly educated.”

Ayo condemned the activities of the miscreants who attacked schools across the country, saying such acts were inimical to the growth of the education sector. (NAN)
