THE Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria (MUSWEN) on Friday appealed to Nigerians to refrain from promoting falsehood and hate speeches.

The group made the call in Ibadan at a press conference to herald its 10thanniversary.

The Executive Secretary of MUSWEN, Prof. Dawud Noibi, urged Nigerians to promote peace with one another in spite of  their religious  and ethnic differences

He said MUSWEN was worried about the negative effects of the politicisation of religion and ethnicity by politicians in a plural society like Nigeria.

Noibi said some politicians hide under the guise of religion to pursue narrow ethnic and political agenda inimical to the peace and unity of the country.

“There is no more appropriate time for leaders to be mindful of their utterances than this trying period in our nation’s history.

“MUSWEN remains committed to peaceful co-existence among the diverse people of Nigeria and to the sanctity of the 1999 constitution as amended.

“We appeal to the peace-loving people of Nigeria, especially Muslims and Christians,  not to succumb to fear-mongering, intimidation, falsehood and hate speeches and remain at peace with one another despite our religious and ethnic differences,’’ Noibi said.

Earlier, the President of MUSWEN, Alhaji Sakariyau Babalola, had said the journey to the 10th anniversary had been challenging and exciting.

He expressed appreciation to stakeholders that had contributed toward the achievements of the organisation.

Babalola said MUSWEN had in the last 10 years provided leadership to enhance peace and unity among Muslim stakeholders in the zone.

He also said that the organisation had taken genuine steps that had set the Muslim community in the region on the path of development and progress.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that dignitaries at the occasion included  Alhaji Kunle Saani, the Chairman of  Muslim Community of Oyo State and  Alhaji Muib Opeloye, Chairman of MUSWEN Education Committee.  (NAN)
