Driver arraigned over alleged theft of chemicals

THE police in Lagos on Tuesday, charged a 44-year-old driver, Yusuf Lateef, before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, over alleged theft of company’s chemicals

Lateef, a driver at Prime Pak Industries, located at Illupeju in Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing of his employer’s goods

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Insp John Iberedem, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 8, 2024, in conspiracy with others who are now at large.

He, alleged that the defendant conspired to steal his employer’s raw chemicals valued N31.8 million.

Iberedem, told the court that the case was reported at the illupeju police station, when the defendant attempted to escape.

He said that the offence contravenes the provisions of sections 285(7) and 412 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that section 285 (7) provides a penalty of seven years imprisonment if found guilty of stealing.

The Magistrate, Mrs E. Kubeinje, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000, with two sureties in like sum.

She held that the sureties must be gainfully employed and must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.

The court, consequently, adjourned the case until Jan. 20, for hearing. (NAN)
