A 38-year-old bus driver, Timothy Gaius, was on Thursday arraigned in a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting a police officer and committing a traffic offence.
Gaius, whose house address was not given, is facing a three-count charge of assault, driving without a driver’s licence and reckless driving.
The Police Prosecutor, Insp Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Oct. 14 at about 11am, along Railway Station Road, Kaduna.
The prosecutor alleged that the defendant, who had no driver’s licence, drove his bus in a reckless and dangerous manner in public.
The prosecutor told the court that the defendant allegedly threatened to beat a police officer, Sgt. Victor Pius and held him by his uniform, while performing his lawful duty of cautioning him for his reckless driving.
Leo said that the offences contravened sections 174(a), 174(c) of the Kaduna State Penal Code 2017 and Section 7 Cap 124 Vol 6 of the Road Traffic Law 2003.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.
The magistrate ruled that the sureties must be gainfully employed and should furnish the court’s Registrar with evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government.
Emmanuel adjourned the case until Nov. 28, for hearing.(NAN)
