A truck driver and his assistant are currently on the run after their vehicle crushed a pregnant woman to death along the Jabi/Airport Road, Abuja.
Our correspondent, who visited the scene, learnt that an unnamed man was also killed in the accident which occurred on Thursday evening.
Bystanders told our correspondent that the deceased persons were attempting to board a taxi on the side of the road when the truck rammed into them and dragged them into the gutter.
An eyewitness, Musa Abdullahi, told our correspondent that the truck, which was conveying granite, lost control before crushing its victims.
He said, “The accident occurred around 4pm. The truck driving towards the airport road lost control. Instead of swerving towards the right which would have led to no casualties, he swerved towards oncoming traffic.
“A pregnant woman who was trying to board a green cab along with a man was hit by the truck. The truck rammed into the taxi and they all fell into a gutter. The pregnant woman and the man died on the spot while the taxi driver was injured.
“The driver of the truck and his motor boy (assistant) immediately fled the scene,” he narrated.
Men of the Federal Road Safety Corps and emergency officials were said to have conveyed the corpses to the mortuary.
An FRSC official told our correspondent that it was likely that the truck experienced a brake failure but it was too soon to know the exact cause. The Corps Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, confirmed the incident.
