Driver in court for allegedly hitting down pedestrian to death

A 38-year-old driver, Adigun Olaonipekun, was on Monday charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly knocking down a pedestrian to death.

The defendant, who lives at 5, Igbara St., Imude Ajangbadi, Lagos, is being tried for reckless driving and manslaughter.

The prosecutor, ASP Clifford Ogu, told the court that the offences were committed on April 22 at Agege Motor Road, Ikeja Along bus stop.

Ogu alleged that the defendant drove recklessly and carelessly knocked down one Elkanah Okesiji, a banker, who was on his way home.

The prosecutor also alleged that the victim died on the spot as a result of head injury.

Ogu said the offences contravened Sections 51 and 52 of the Road Traffic Law of Lagos State, 2018.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

In her ruling, Chief Magistrate S. K. Matepo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Matepo adjourned the case until July 19 for mention. (
