Driver in court over alleged reckless driving, manslaughter in Ogun

A 20-year-old driver, Bakare Sadiq, who allegedly drove a vehicle in a reckless and dangerous manner, leading to the death of three persons, on Wednesday, appeared before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun.

Sadiq, of no fixed address, is facing a two-count charge of reckless driving and manslaughter.

The Prosecutor, G. O. Adebayo, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Dec. 22, 2019 at about 4 pm. at Ipokia area of Ota.

Adebayo said that the defendant drove a Toyota Camry car, with registration number: BDG 337 EF, recklessly, resulting in the death of Ajibogunsoro Sule, 45; Alabi Iyabo, 45 and Rashidat Mufutau, 10.

The prosecutor stated that the defendant also caused damage to a Bajaj motorcycle, with registration number: AKD 844 QJ, valued at N230,000 in the process of driving dangerously and recklessly on the road.

She said that the offences contravened Sections 6(1) and 17 of the Federal Highway Act, Cap. 135, revised Laws of Federation, 2006.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Chief Magistrate, Mr O. L. Oke, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N250,000, with two sureties in like sum.

Oke said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, be gainfully employed and with evidence of tax payment to the Ogun government. He adjourned the case till Dec. 3, for further hearing. (NAN)
