AN NGO, Southern Nigeria Peoples Mandate on Tuesday attributed the rising cases of rape in the country to drug abuse and cultism.
The NGO’s President, Mr Augustine Chukwudum, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) in Enugu, that government must urgently evolve measures to contain drug abuse cultism in the country.
“It is only by tackling these two monsters that the increasing rape incidences in the country would be minimised.
“Today in Nigeria; small boys between the ages of 13 to 22 are fully involved in cult activities in most communities.
“They move around with dangerous weapons, smoke Indian hemp in the neighbourhood, and also torment people at will.
“We are raising this alarm because these misguided youths also go about raping female of all ages even those old enough to be their grandmothers,’’ he said.
Chukwudum appealed to politicians to stop arming youths during elections and standing by them when arrested for involvement in any atrocity.
“The security agents and government at all levels must step up the war against drug abuse and cultism.
“If we say that youths are leaders of tomorrow, are these the kind of leaders Nigeria is going to produce in the future,’’ he stressed.
