THE National Population Commission (NPC) says its ongoing Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD), in some states, will help improve the nation’s security architecture in tackling banditry and kidnapping.
Its Director in Osun, Mr. Bayo Adejobi, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Osogbo.
“NPC is deploying the best standard computer-based technology for the enumeration area demarcation.
“It will give the country an effective database that will help improve the nation’s security architecture,” Adejobi said.
He said the EAD would capture images of localities and buildings, adding that the captured images and buildings would be of help in fighting crimes in the country.
“I believe the area demarcation apparatus, which is digitally compassed in nature, is capable of showing images of locations, building roofs, streets, especially where any crime is likely to have been committed.
“By the time we are done, our images will be available to everybody, including the security agencies.
“Our map can be used, both in soft copies and hard copies, because the images show everything we need.
“If any crime is committed in a particular location, the imaging room is only checked to easily identify the criminal elements involved,” Adejobi said.
According to him, bandits and kidnappers have routes they follow, and once the security makes use of the NPC computer-based map, it will assist them to locate the hideout of the criminal elements.
Adejobi said the Federal Government had given the commission mandate to test run the EAD between June 7 and June 13, to know how results of EAD will look like whenever the census is being organized.
The NPC state director further said EAD was the bedrock to any successive government in determining the statistics and logistics, adding that this was the best time to get it right.
“The EAD is biometric in nature, which will help to identify every person and building in the country.
“It is only NPC that will be able to tell you, through EAD, the total numbers of hospitals, schools, hotels, churches, mosques, among others. It is a massive reservoir of data and databases.
“The demarcation will help in the conduct of our future elections, and it can be used to zero down to localities and wards,” he said.
Adejobi, however, called for the support of NAN, as the leading news agency in Africa, to protect the commission’s activities toward actualizing the set mandate and objectives. (NAN)
