The Speaker of Ekiti House of Assembly, Funminiyi Afuye, says the Easter celebration should be a period for sober reflection among Christian faithful.

Afuye gave the admonition in his Easter message issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Mr Tai Oguntayo, and made available to newsmen on Sunday in Ado-Ekiti.

Afuye, who rejoiced with Christians in Ekiti for witnessing the Easter amidst  the COVID-19 pandemic, noted that the 2020 festivity came at a critical period.

“The 2020 Easter celebration came at a time when the entire nation and the world are passing through COVID-19 pandemic.

” For this  trying time alone across all nations, there is need for sober reflection as we all stay at home during this  period.

“We must use this period to pray to the Almighty God for an end to this pandemic ravaging the world,” Afuye said.

The speaker, however, urged Ekiti people  to be their brothers’ keepers during the celebration by assisting the poor, vulnerable and disadvantaged in their midst.

“Giving a helping hand at this crucial moment means following the commandments of God, particularly the one which admonished us  to love our neighbour as ourselves,” he said.

Afuye added that it was the love for Ekiti people that made the state’s lawmakers to pledge their April salaries to providing succour for vulnerable persons.

He assured residents that the assembly would do everything to complement Gov. Kayode Fayemi’s efforts at alleviating the sufferings of the masses.

Afuye also enjoined residents to stay safe wherever they were during this critical period. (NAN)
