Economy: Ex-Delta Commissioner urges FG to strengthen industrial policy

A former Commissioner for Special Duties in Delta, Dr Nnamdi Onochie, has urged the Federal Government to strengthen its industrial policy to attract more economic growth.
In a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday, Onochie said that Nigeria’s industrial policy, formulated since independence in 1960, needed a review to meet current developments.
He said that a review of the policy would lead to growth in various economic sectors and enhance the Nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“The nation’s industrial development policy calls for elaborate policy structuring and positioning as we approach another general elections in 2023.
“Indeed, our critical efforts from now should be to renew our position as the fastest growing economy in Africa and the global hub of businesses in the Southern Hemispheric.’’
Onochie noted that it was important for decision-makers to articulate policies that would be realistic and achievable towards meeting the yearnings and aspirations of the people.
He encouraged stakeholders to recommit to exploiting opportunities in every sector of the economy, especially manufacturing and tourism to boost employment engender prosperity nationwide.
The former Nigerian envoy to Algeria and the Philippines also advised that government should liberalize tax and provide other fiscal and monetary incentives to citizens to run their businesses.
“I also recommend that government should provide infrastructure that will energize, increase and ginger the production of local materials and products for export,’’ he said.
Onochie, a pan-Nigerian activist is also a leadership coach, strategist and polyglot. (NAN)
