THE president of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, commission has expressed deep concerned for the aftermath of the communal elections held on February 4, 2018 in Guinea. The president of the commission said while he welcomed the successful holding of elections peacefully, he was concerned about the recent developments in the country characterised by strong tensions and violence causing loss of life and injuries.
He said the post-election violence is detrimental to the peace and tranquillity prevailing in the country and in the region.
The president of the ECOWAS commission, therefore, called on political parties and independent candidates and their supporters to refrain from any recourse to violence and to give priority to the peaceful remedies provided for and defined by the legal provisions in force.
“The president of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, Commission strongly condemns this escalating violence and expresses his compassion and solidarity to the aggrieved families, the Government and people of Guinea,” a statement from the ECOWAS said.
