ECOWAS hosts 2nd meeting of Committee of Permanent Representatives of Member States

THE ECOWAS Commission hosted the second meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of ECOWAS Member States as an advisory body to the ECOWAS Council of Ministers on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 in Abuja.

The meeting was officially opened by Alieu Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission and Ambassador Musa Sanu Nuhu, Permanent Representative of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to ECOWAS.

This meeting, the second of its kind, which brings together the Ambassadors of ECOWAS

Member States accredited to the Commission, is being held prior to the start of the statutory meetings of ECOWAS.

The purpose of the meeting is to enable the Ambassadors representing the Member States to examine and review the various issues that will be submitted to the ECOWAS Council of Ministers next week.

A number of issues will be discussed at this second meeting of Ambassadors. These include the presentation of the report on the state of the community, which addresses issues relating to the functioning of the Commission, Parliament, the Court of Justice, GIABA and WAHO; the presentation of the state of implementation of the recommendations of the last Council of Ministers; the presentation of a memorandum on the final working report of the Ministers in charge of social protection; and the presentation of a memorandum on the status of implementation of the trade liberalisation scheme in West Africa.

Other matters and proposals relating to the future and reform of ECOWAS will also be discussed and examined by the participants at this meeting.

A second meeting of Ambassadors will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at the ECOWAS

Commission to examine issues relating to security and peace, as a prelude to the holding of the Meeting of Ministers on Mediation and Security in West Africa, which will also take place next week in Abuja.
