ECOWAS parliament adopts key regulations for regional electricity advancement

ECOWAS parliament officially adopted the draft resolution on the ECOWAS regional electricity market on Monday, December 4, 2023. Following extensive discussions during the Joint Committee meeting held on November 27 and 28, members commended the commission and its team for their remarkable draft Community Acts. These acts are designed to establish a robust legal and institutional framework, promoting the harmonization of laws within the electricity sector.
The committee, convinced of the significant benefits, highlighted the acts’ potential to provide financial autonomy crucial for the optimal functioning of ECOWAS Agencies and Bodies overseeing electricity matters. The proposed regulations included a Draft Regulation for the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Market Levy, another for the Surveillance of the ECOWAS Regional Electricity Market, and a Directive for the Harmonization of Criteria for Licenses and Authorization in the market.
The joint committee, confident in their endorsement, urged the Ppenary to issue a favorable opinion for the adoption of these pivotal Community Acts by the Council of Ministers, paving the way for a transformative era in the regional electricity landscape.
