THE Standing Committee of the Nigerian Guild of Editors has appealed to the aggrieved parties in the Presidential and National Assembly elections held on Saturday, February 23, “to follow due process in seeking redress for any perceived injustice arising from the polls.”

The NGE, which expressed reservations on the conduct of the elections, also asked all the stakeholders to urgently take steps to address the lapses witnessed during the polls “to ensure a better exercise in future, particularly the coming Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections.”

In a communiqué issued at the end of its meeting held in Lagos on Friday, March 1, the NGE condemned the violence that characterised the elections in some parts of the country in which many people were killed and several electoral materials burnt.

“Government, security agencies, INEC and politicians must live above board and avoid every action that could lead to a breakdown of law and order in future elections,” the communiqué said.

“To ensure better organised elections in future, the new administration should, as a matter of urgency, set up machinery to carry out electoral reforms. This will guarantee a more credible and acceptable process,” the communiqué signed by Funke Egbemode and Vitoria Ibanga, the president and general secretary respectively, said further.
