The Nigerian Guild of Editors has appealed to the abductors of Donu Kogbara to release the newspaper columnist unconditionally, saying she has always been on the side of the poor and downtrodden for a better Nigeria

THE Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE, has pleaded for the release of Donu Kogbara, a newspaper columnist, kidnapped on Sunday, August 30, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

In a statement signed on behalf of the NGE by Deen Garba Muhammad, its president, the Guild said: “Those holding Donu should remember that they have mothers, sisters, wives and daughters whom they cherish and protect intensely. Donu is also a mother, wife and sister to other people who care deeply about her. They must not hurt her and should please release her to return to her family immediately.”

As a columnist, the NGE noted, Kogbara had consistently stood for the truth, the poor and the downtrodden in her approach to national and local issues. Hence, it would be a great disservice to her and the nation to subject Kogbara to the traumatic experience of being a victim of kidnapping.

The Guild, therefore, appealed to her abductors to be humane and to release her unconditionally so that she would continue with her crusade for a better country for all Nigerians.
The NGE also appealed to the police and other security agencies to take every step necessary to ensure the safe release of Kogbara. Similarly, the Guild would want the police to put in place measures that would guarantee the safety and security of all Nigerians, especially those exposed to higher risks such as journalists.

“To the family of Donu, we want you to know that we feel your pain at this very trying period and we shall continue to work and pray for the safe return of our dear colleague,” the statement said.

Kogbara, who writes a column in the Vanguard newspaper, was reportedly whisked away in the early hours of Sunday by unknown gunmen at her Nkpogu residence, Port Harcourt, in a CRV jeep.
