Edo: PRP candidate urges Okpebholo to lead with humility, diligence
Politics
PATIENCE Ofure-Key, the People’s Redemption Party (PRP) candidate in the Saturday’s Edo governorship election, has urged the governor-elect, Monday Okpebholo, to lead with humility and diligence.
Ofure-Key, in her message of appreciation to the Edo people, made available to newsmen in Benin on Tuesday, told the governor-elect to focus on the welfare of Edo citizens.
She noted that the people deserved a leadership that would serve and not exploit them, stressing that his decisions must reflect the hope for a prosperous and peaceful Edo.
The PRP candidate said the election was more than a moment in Edo’s history, adding that it tested the people’s resolve, unity, and belief in democracy.
She, however, said the future of the state was reduced to mere transaction following vote-buying allegations during the election.
According to her, selling votes for short-term gains comes with dire consequences.
She added that the betrayal of trust threatened the progress of the state and indicated selling the children’s future.
“This practice solves short-term problems but perpetuates cycles of poverty and poor governance, holding Edo State back,” she said.
Ofure-Key also frowned at voter apathy, saying it weighed heavily on the election.
“Many stayed home, disillusioned, believing their votes wouldn’t count. This has serious consequences for our collective future.
“By not voting, we surrender our voice and let others decide for us. Our participation in the process is essential to hold those in power accountable.
“My fellow citizens, power ultimately belongs to you. No leader can govern without your input. This election reminded us of the critical role you play in shaping Edo’s future.
“We must not let frustration deter us. The future of Edo is not for sale; it belongs to those who believe in justice, fairness, and the common good. Stay engaged,” she said.
Ofure-Key, the only female candidate in the election, saluted the efforts of Edo women, saying they made history.
“Your strength and support have been crucial. Together, we’ve proven that our voices matter in leadership.
“Although we didn’t clinch the governorship, our stand has broken barriers. This is just the beginning of the fight for leadership and equality in Edo and Nigeria.
“I urge you to continue supporting one another, mentoring younger women, and standing tall. We are closer today to equality than we were yesterday,” Ofure-Key said.
She also appreciated Edo indigenes, residents, members of the diaspora and PRP members.
“I address you with deep gratitude following the conclusion of the governorship election.
“To the diaspora, thank you for your unwavering support despite the distance. Your contributions and advocacy have shown the power of unity across borders, pushing us forward.
“To my classmates, your encouragement has been invaluable,” she said. (NAN)
