WEMIMO Matthew, Head Coach of Edo Queens, has assured that the team would come back bigger and better, their ouster from the semi-finals of the 2021 Aiteo Cup Competition notwithstanding.

Matthew, in a statement by the club’s Media Officer, Ogieva Ehiosun, however praised her players for putting up a “fantastic performance” in the semi-final match against FC Robo.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Edo Government-owned team lost after a penalty kicks shootout in the game against FC Robo played in Abuja.

Matthew, who is now on a national assignment with the Super Falcons in Austria, said she was proud of the team in spite of losing the final ticket to FC Robo.

“The players did a great job, and I am very proud of them. This is my first state assignment for Edo Queens since I took over, and I am happy with the performance.

“We have a strong team, both on and off the pitch, and I have full faith in their ability to deliver our club over the coming league season.

“We are building up a team for Edo Queens which have the capacity to stand up to any team in the Nigeria Women Professional League (NWPL),” she stated.

Matthew however insisted that they were not going to allow their ouster from the Aiteo Cup kill their vision and dream for the Edo Queens, even though it was very painful

“That is football, you win some you lose some. But my greatest joy is that Edo Queens gave a good account of themselves and we have put this game behind, we have moved forward and we are moving forward.”

The coach said the team had gone back to the drawing board to prepare for the league and would be ready to live to fight another day.

“We want to win laurels for Gov. Godwin Obaseki, and our sports-loving deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, because of their contributions and concern for sports development in Edo.

“The Aiteo Cup ouster will not in any way affect the team’s preparations for the League. We are ready and, by the special grace of God, Edo Queens will definitely bounce back big.”

NAN reports that Matthew was in June unveiled as the new coach of Edo Queens following the departure of their former coach.
