The InnerWheel District 912, Nigeria, has presented awards of excellence to two personalities and inaugurated an equipped new library to the St John’s Anglican Primary School, Imota, Lagos State.
The District Chairman, Mrs Abiola Aberuagba, who commissioned the project on Monday in Lagos, said the gesture aimed at improving welfare, learning and education pursuit of the pupils in the school.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group also presented award of excellence to Dr Mudashiru Bakare-Agroro, the Ranodu of Imota and Dr Bolaji Onafowokan, a retired Colonel, who got a Ph.D holder at age 85.
Aberuagba said that the award was in recognition of their exceptional accomplishments, particularly earning a Ph.D. at a remarkable age, a testament to their leadership, unwavering dedication, perseverance, and passion for learning.
She explained that InnerWheel did some renovation projects for the school, which included replacement of the roof and ceiling, installation of new doors and windows, floor tiling, provision of brand-new furniture, including seating for 24 students and a librarian’s desk.
Aberuagba, an alumna of the school, added that some other items donated to the school were a fully equipped library, four bookshelves, variety of books, two laptops, school uniforms and three ceiling fans.
“The donation is as a result of the passion to give back to the society and the desire to invest in one’s root.
“This is the school that made me who I am today. I joined the school in primary six before leaving the town eventually for Lagos. So, I thought of a way of giving back to the school that made me.
“Since they celebrated the 90th anniversary last year, and I equally promised that when I become the District Chairman, one of our project is to do something in this school and the request is that ‘they need a library’.
“So, the Executives and the District decided to give the school a library,” Aberuagba said.
The Chairman Planning Committee of the project, Mrs Sumbo Osunbayo, said that inauguration of the library project was part of the activities to celebration the International InnerWheel Day 2025, marked annually on Jan. 10.
Osunbayo recounted other service initiatives to include visits to Island Maternity Hospital, where gifts and cash were presented to the first two babies of the day.
Also, to Ajegunle Community in Ifelodun LCDA, where food items were distributed to no fewer than 400 residents.
“The library commissioning is the final phase of our outreach efforts, which is the Star Project for the year, and we are delighted to impact young lives through education,” she said.
Receiving his award, Bakare-Agroro expressed gratitude, urging the students to prioritise education, describing it as the “key to success.”
Similarly, Onafowokan, who earned his Ph.D. at age 85, emphasised that education was a “therapy that rejuvenates the mind and body”.
“Since I began my Ph.D. journey, many of my health issues have disappeared. Age should never be a barrier to learning. What matters is focus and determination,” he said.
The event underscored InnerWheel District 912’s commitment to education, community service, and lifelong learning, leaving a lasting impact on the Imota community. (NAN)
