The Academic Staff Union of Universities suspends strike on the grounds that it will continue if the federal government reneges on the memorandum of agreement

STUDENTS of tertiary institutions in Nigeria will heave a sigh of relief as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, suspends its three-month old strike.

Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU president announced the suspension after meeting with the federal government on Thursday evening.

According to him, the strike is suspended beginning from midnight today and lecturers are to resume work on Friday, Febraury 8.

He, however, warned that “this is a suspension, not an outright call-off. If government reneges on our memorandum of agreement, we will embark on another industrial action with full force.”

Lecturers are by this suspension to resume work on Friday according to information published on  ASUU’s Twitter handle, @ASUUNGR on Thursday evening:

The strike was called off after a two hour meeting with Chris Ngige, minister of labour and employment.

Ngige said after the meeting that eight areas of disagreements were discussed and agreed upon by the two parties, while expressing gratitude to ASUU leadership for their understanding.
