THE Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr.Vincent Okpala, says Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital School of Nursing has the best standard to produce quality nurses.

Okpala said this during 2019 Matriculation ceremony of the student nurses, held at the institution’s premises, Nkpor, in Idemili North Local Government Area, LGA.

The commissioner, who was represented by Health Ministry’s Acting Director of Nursing, Anslem Ekwealor, enjoined the student nurses to effectively use their potential to maximize their chances of becoming accomplished nurses.

The Chief Medical Director, CMD of the COOUTH, Dr. Basil Nwankwo, represented by the Deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Emmanuel Azubuike, congratulated the students.

“It is the beginning of your desire to become qualified nurses. Shun all forms of distractions and work harder to achieve your desired goal of being professionals as you know, the school has no room for favouritism.

“Nursing is a noble profession aimed at saving life and it cannot accommodate indolence,” he said.

The CMD promised to support the students to ensure that they reached the zenith of their profession.

The institution’s principal, Perpetual Anene, said the ceremony would serve as the platform, where nursing students receive their very first cap that would mark their formal admission into the school of nursing.

She said that the lighting of candle for students was done in remembrance of Florence Nightingale, popularly called the lady with the lamp, who gave nursing profession great reputation.

Anene told the students to allow their light to shine by giving hope to the hopeless and dispelling darkness in the life of patients by serving humanity.

“Nurses are instruments in the hands of God,” she said.

The principal urged the students to work harder to be able to meet with challenges, ahead as the school has zero tolerance for examination malpractices.

She, then, appealed for more support from the government and well-meaning individuals to ensure that the school maintained its standards.

The Chairman of Idemili North Local Government Area, Asha Nnabuife, urged the students to continue with the zeal to succeed and make their parents and Anambra proud.

“Work more with the people of Idemili North and Nkpor, where the institution is situated, as they have dignitaries that are willing to support the school selflessly,’’ he said.

Fifty student nurses out of 100 students admitted made it after the compulsory six months preliminary training section, PTS, examinations.
