Kate Omenugha, the commissioner for Basic Education Anambra State, has said no time is too late for one to begin education.

Omenugha said this while declaring open a one day seminar organised by the state Agency for literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education to mark this year’s International Literacy Day at the Agency’s Vocational Centre, Awka.

The commissioner was represented by Nwabueze Nwankwo, her permanent secretary Ministry of Basic Education. “There is no barrier to Education. Education is the key to development in any nation,’’ she said.

The commissioner, then, commended Governor Willie Obiano for his support to the Agency.

“We thank our able Gov. Obiano for his support to the Agency and the Ministry, which has resulted into excellent performance in this sector.

“And we call on adult learners to embrace Mass Literacy Adult and Non-Formal Education programme to become Literate,’’ she added.

In a welcome address, Donatus Nwosu, the acting executive secretary and director of the agency, said that illiteracy in Anambra before Obiano’s administration was about 52 per cent but had drastically been reduced to 22 percent.

“This achievement has been due to the significant measures taken by Gov, Obiano with the assistance ministry to the Adult and Non-Formal Education sub-sectors in the state.

“This is aimed at rehabilitating the illiterate and the out of school youths.’’

Collins Nwogwugwu, an Economics Professor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, urged the Agency to engage in consistent monitoring and sensitisation to achieve excellent mass literacy.

“I urge you to design more strategies in motivating and encouraging people to embrace Adult Education,’’ Nwogwugwu said.

Rey Offor, chairman of the occasion, commended the Agency for their great achievements.

Other participants include Bridget Nwosu (Ayamelum), John Dilinyelim (Oyi) and Uzoamaka Enendu (Anambra East).
