Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra has been commended by United Nations Industrial Development Organisation, UNIDO, for his commitment to the education sector in Anambra.

Francis Ukoh, the national coordinator UNIDO, made the commendation at a sensitisation workshop organised by Anambra State Ministry of Economic Planning Budget and Development Partners and Ministry of Education in Collaboration with UNIDO.

The commendation was based on governor’s recent partnership with UNIDO on HP-LIFE Project and making Anambra, one of the states with the highest ‘State of the Art Equipment’ in its technical colleges.

The sensitisation, which was for principals and vice-principals (Academy) of some selected schools in the state, was held at IDK Learning Centre, Awka.

Ukoh said that the Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs, LIFE, programme, which was sponsored by HP Computer Company, was aimed at training youths especially those in Senior Secondary Schools on skills acquisition.

This was to enable the youths to become entrepreneurs, even while still in secondary schools and shape them into focused careers in future.

The coordinator explained that the programme was based on three major areas — partnership, sustainability and impact.

“Anambra State government has invested a lot in the project to enable these youths to develop their skills and learn more to mould them to become better youths when they leave school.

“If all our youths have something doing, we will have stable and crime-free environment,” Ukoh said.

Kate Omenugha, commissioner for Basic Education, applauded UNIDO and the state government for the project, stressing that Obiano had never relented in fulfilling his strategic objectives for education.

Omenugha said the governor was determined to meet the learning needs of all children through equitable distribution of resources and learning of lifelong skills to ensure that the state would be one of three top states with highest literacy level.

She, then, enjoined principals and vice-principals to be the driving force for the programme in their various schools.

Omenugha urged them to inculcate the programme in the school’s schedule, where every student from SS1 to SS3 would be given at least an hour lecture daily on skills acquisition by trained teachers.

The commissioner also appealed to the technical schools to ensure use of `the state of art equipment’ provided them to train the students in various skills in order to improve productivity and generate revenues for maintenance and smooth running of the schools.
