EGINA, the latest of TOTAL’s deep-water developments, and the third project of its kind developed by Total in Nigeria, after Akpo and Usan has recorded 93.3 per cent completion.

Ahmadu-Kida Musa, deputy managing director, Deepwater Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria made this known during the Egina Spotlight session at the Nigeria Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition, July 3, in Abuja.

According to Musa, “Truth be said, Egina will continue to occupy the spotlight for some time to come until the Egina project NC achievement record is broken. I hope we wouldn’t have to wait a long time for that!

“The project is currently at 93.3% completion with the FPSO moored at the SHI-MCI yard at Ladol Island in Lagos, following the integration of six locally fabricated topside modules out of the 18 that makes up the topside.”

The Egina FPSO which to date is the largest of its kind in the Total Group comes at a length of 330m long, 61m wide and 33.5m of hull depth. “The FPSO is of course what we all see above the ocean surface but it is just one part of the Egina Project, there is the Subsea Production System and the Umbilical Flowlines & Riser packages. In all, the Egina Project is one full of Technological excellence with Local Expertise,” he said.

In the coming weeks, the FPSO will sail away to Egina field, which is located in OML130, approximately 150 kilometres offshore Nigeria. It is the deepest offshore development carried out so far in Nigeria, with water depths of over 1,500 meters, and the project is designed to produce 200,000 barrels per day of oil at plateau. In addition to the oil, the Egina field will produce gas. The associated gas will be partly re-injected into the reservoir to maintain reservoir pressure, and partly piped to supply the domestic gas market.

“All attention today is understandably on the FPSO which is very visible from the Outer Marina or the Eko Bridge in Lagos, the Overall 16 BUSD Egina project has made remarkable achievements in the development of in-country value and boasts of 77% Nigerian Content achievement.

Egina’s impressive profile and the achievements are not an isolated case for Total, particularly regarding record achievements in local content development. Egina project achieved many firsts which are now added to the hall of firsts that Total has been achieving on her previous development projects.

They include the Ofon Phase 2 Project on OML 102, which was designed to upgrade Ofon field after 40 years of operation, also stands out as another example of TOTAL’s commitment to the ideals and objectives of the Nigerian Content law. “On Ofon 2, we had more than 1,400 people working offshore and more than 1 million man-hours performed without any accident. The Ofon 2 living quarter’s platform was the first to be constructed in Nigeria. During the project, local yards also fabricated 1,800 metric ton jacket bridges.

“Also, as part of preparation for Ofon 2, we assisted Nigerdock to procure equipment which was needed to accomplish the work scope they handled for the project. Another key Nigerian Content achievement of Ofon 2 has been the partnerships it forged between international contractors and local businesses and communities, thus accelerating technology transfer, training and the hiring of Nigerian workers.

“Overall, we achieved 65% Nigerian Content on Ofon Phase 2 Project,” Musa said.

According to him, the OML 58 field Upgrade project is a mature onshore field located in the Niger Delta and an upgrade project was carried out to increase field production and maintain it for the next 25 years after producing for more than 50 years. “To achieve this, we had to upgrade our facility to present day standards, improve operational efficiency and equally the of supply gas to both the domestic market and export via the OUR/NOPL pipeline system. This installation is a key infrastructure within Nigeria Gas Master Plan with capacity for 300 MMSCFD, the pipeline through IMO RIVER node allows the supply of gas to the ALAOJI Power Plant as well as other gas consumers (off-takers) in the Eastern Grid of the Nigerian Gas Master plan.”

A total of 28 million man-hours were expended in this project and it achieved about 85 percent Nigerian Content.

The Egina project holds two consecutive World records for the fastest drilled wells. The number of drilling days expended on drilling Egina wells B-W25 and B-W09 were 22.7 days and 20.9 days consecutively. Another world record was that they drilled the longest length within a 24 hours duration – 1,024m.

In as much as TOTAL has continued to expound on its respect of Nigerian Content to the hilt  in its new projects of IKIKE and PREOWEI which are still under study, new projects like Egina are necessary if the pace of growth and development is to be sustained in the Oil and Gas industry, he said. “We all know that there are several large deep-water discoveries still to be developed. In the coming years, we will need the right policies in place with investor-friendly legislation and good motivation of the Oil & Gas industry to make this happen.”

He added that all the yards that have been involved in the development of the Egina project should be kept active to maintain the momentum, their infrastructure and the improved competency levels of their human capital.

“Total along with its partners NAPIMS, CNOOC, SAPETRO and PETROBRAS are very proud that Egina project has set the pace in so many areas of the Nigerian Content, and the NCDMB is also most proud of this achievement, as its invaluable contribution to guiding and pragmatically steering the Project to this destination has more than paid off.”
