EGYPTIAN Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with his Saudi counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud in Cairo, where they called for Arab unity and solidarity.

The meeting addressed ways to enhance mechanisms of Egyptian-Saudi consultation and coordination on regional issues, including the conflicts in Sudan, Libya, Yemen and Syria, said the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The two ministers stressed the need to advance the frameworks of joint Arab action and solidarity in facing various regional crises through “purely Arab” solutions in order to preserve Arab national security.

The Egyptian and Saudi top diplomats also discussed ways to push for a just and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict that guarantees the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The diplomats talks were held on the sidelines of the Saudi foreign minister’s visit to Cairo to take part in the first meeting of the Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee on Syria.

The Arab Ministerial Liaison Committee on Syria was formed by the Arab League (AL) and comprises the foreign ministers of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon and the AL chief.

The committee meeting was also joined by Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad who held talks earlier in the day with his Egyptian counterpart. (Xinhua/NAN)
