THE residents of the Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom have commended the Chairman of the Council,  Mr. Akaninyene Tommey, for maintaining the major roads in the area.

They gave the commendation on Wednesday in Eket in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

The residents noted that the Operation Zero Potholes Campaign, launched by the council chair, was conceived to ensure regular maintenance of major roads in the oil-rich town.

Mr. John Otu, who resides in the area and park chairman in Eket, commended the council boss for filling major potholes in the area.

He decried the deplorable state of roads in Eket for over five years, saying the present council administration had changed the face of the area.

“With the ongoing rehabilitation, most roads that were not motorable can now be accessed and for an oil-rich town such as Eket, it is a welcome development.

“To witness this level of road maintenance within the first month of assumption of office is remarkable and heartwarming,” Otu said.

According to him, since the coming into office of the present chair in less than one month, potholes have been fixed in major roads and Eket now has a new look.

“Our greatest challenge in Eket is deplorable roads and potholes, but since Tommey came on board, there are no more bad roads.

“He has fixed the major potholes that were causing diversion of cars in the area and now the whole road is motorable,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr. Assam Abia, a resident in Eket, commended the council boss for the rehabilitation of major roads.

He applauded Tommey for initiating `Operation Keep Eket Clean’, saying he has created job opportunities for the youth and women in the area.

“It shows focus and systematic execution of his mandate and plan for the people of Eket Local Government Area.

“The chairman has begun daily sweeping of Eket-Oron Road and other major roads in Eket to ensure safe driving conditions while improving road capacity and operational efficiency,” he said.

Abia said the development would not only beautify and keep Eket clean but would also create job opportunities for women and the youth.

In his remarks, another resident, Chief Christopher Isong, lauded the chairman for maintaining the roads, filling the potholes, and the daily sweeping of roads in the area.

“Highways and roads are continuously exposed to changing weather conditions that can rapidly jeopardize public safety if not properly maintained.

“The roads that have been abandoned for some years are now wearing a new look, we are so happy with this present council boss of Eket,” Isong said.

He said the chairman had started to assist youths in the area to be self-reliant in order to create job opportunities for others.

NAN reports that the portions of roads rehabilitated included Idua road, Udoh Umoh Street, Idiam Street, Uqua Street, Stadium Road, and RCC Road, among others. (NAN)
