Ekiti Assembly Speaker visits flood victims, assures of govt.’s intervention

SPEAKER, Ekiti House of Assembly, Mr Funminiyi Afuye, has assured of intervention from the federal and state governments to combat perennial flooding in Ikere-Ekiti.
Afuye gave the assurance on Friday during his assessment tour of the areas affected by the flood which attended Tuesday night’s downpour in the town.
The speaker, who represents Ikere Constituency 1 in the Assembly, also visited the victims of the incident, sympathised with the people of the community and decried the recurrence of flooding in the town, on annual basis.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the downpour destroyed several property and rendered many homeless.
Some of the affected areas visited by the speaker included Oshunwemida Estate, Kajola area, NITEL junction, Ajolagun and Magna, off Moshood Road.
Afuye, who described the incessant cases of flooding as unfortunate, called for government’s intervention to avert reoccurrence.
He, however, called on the people living in flood-prone areas in the state to always adhere to environmental laws to avoid being victims of flooding again.
“I want to urge our people to stop dumping refuse in drains and erecting structures in waterways so that we do not continually experience flood disasters,” the speaker said
NAN reports that Afuye was accompanied on the visit by his deputy, Alh. Hakeem Jamiu, the Chairman, House Committee on Environment, Mr Tunde Idowu and Mr Adegoke Olajide, representing Efon Constituency. (NAN)
