HOUSE of Representatives member, Akin Rotimi, has unveiled plans to host a talent hunt competition for para athletes across all 16 LGAs of Ekiti State.
The lawmaker represents Ekiti North 1 (Ikole/Oye) Federal Constituency.
Rotimi revealed the plans on Saturday in Ado-Ekiti during the inauguration and swearing-in ceremony of the Ekiti State Para Athletics Association Board of Committee.
The ceremony took place at the Oluyemi Kayode Stadium and was attended by stakeholders and enthusiasts of para athletics.
As the chairman of the committee, Rotimi emphasised that the competition, with its date to be announced shortly, demonstrated his commitment to prioritising the welfare of para athletes in Ekiti.
Rotimi also chairs the House of Representatives Committee on Media and Public Affairs.
He urged committee members to collaborate with him to elevate Ekiti para athletics, aligning with Gov. Abiodun Oyebanji’s efforts to promote sports activities.
Rotimi stressed that the initiative was a testament to the inclusion of para athletes in the government’s shared prosperity agenda.
“I am urging you today to work with me in lifting Ekiti State para athletics to another level,” he said.
He also expressed his passion for the needs of para athletes and the overall welfare of persons with disabilities.
“I am very passionate about the needs of para athletes, not only that, the overall welfare of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).
“Let’s prioritise the welfare of our members, let’s always stand up to their needs, because this is our chance to make a great difference for Ekiti state Para Athletics,” he noted.
According to him, the competition, date yet to be revealed, will be held in all 16 Local Government Areas of Ekiti State.
The newly inaugurated committee, however, comprises Toyin Ojo as Vice Chairman, Ojo Peter as Para Athletics Coach and Oluwafemi Blessing as Secretary General.
Others are Blessing Akinyemi, Media Director, Rotawo Olusegun, Para Athletics Representative, with Patrick Oyeniyi, Yaquob Popoola and Olaota Adediji as members.
Rotimi said that, with the support of the committee and the governor, he was confident that the initiative would make a positive impact on the lives of para athletes in Ekiti. (NAN)
