THE Chairman, Oye Local Government Area, Ekiti, Mr Sunday Ajimoko, has advised residents in communities in the area to desist from open defecation and other unhealthy sanitary habits.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Oye-Ekiti on Monday, Ajimoko said that open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of refuse were harmful to the environment.
He said that it was important for residents of the area to keep their environments clean in order to avoid outbreak of diseases.
”As a council, we are against any activity that has harmful effects on the environment and the people.
”The rainy season is here; it is our duty as a people to promote a healthy environment. It is in the interest of our health,” he said.
The chairman stated that it was an unhealthy sanitary habit to defecate in open areas and to dump refuse in drains and waterways.
”Refuse dumped in drains will definitely block the flow of water. Open defecation will lead to outbreak of disease. We must help ourselves,” he said.
Ajimoko said it was worrisome that many residents of the area had defied every effort by the government to promote environmental cleanliness.
He said that the council would arrest and prosecute anyone found defecating in open places or dumping refuse in water channels.(NAN)
