Some residents of Ekiti State have called on the federal and state governments to prioritise the welfare of workers in the new year.

The residents made the call in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ado-Ekiti.

They said government at all levels should ensure prompt payment of workers’ salaries in the new year, noting that majority of workers depend on the monthly pay to meet their needs and family obligations.

A federal civil servant, Mr Idowu Tokunbo, urged the Federal Government to do everything within its powers to pay the new national minimum wage in view of the rising costs living in the country.

Another federal staff, Mrs Bolanle Aluko said the Federal Government should make the workers’ welfare their priority in the new year and change the narrative on the current plight of workers.

A civil servant in the state, Chief Adeojo Emmanuel, lauded the state governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi’s gesture by paying their arrears on Tuesday.

“This gesture shows that 2019 would be a great year for Ekiti workers, as a popular adage says, `Morning shows the Day,’ he added.

Also, another civil servant, Mrs Modupe Bamisaye, said that she was pleasantly surprised when she got her salary bank alert on Wednesday, adding that she could not still believe it was true.

She urged the governor to keep up the good deed in the life of his administration.

She, however, noted that many people are of the view that the gesture was a bait to entice the electorate to vote President Muhammadu Buhari for second term.

She said the governor should always endeavour to strike a balance between the workers’ welfare and improvement of the living condition of the generality of  people of the state.

Contributing, a resident, Mr Kolawole Adebowale, said  he looked forward to a peaceful  2019  before, during and after the presidential elections in the country. (NAN)
