AN Enugu-based group, Mandate Renaissance Initiative, says it has mobilised residents of the state to fully participate in the March 9, Governorship and State House of Assembly elections in the state.

The Coordinator of the group, Mr Ifeanyi Agu, disclosed this on Wednesday in Enugu, during the group’s mobilisation meeting.

Agu, who is also the Chairman of Udi South Development Centre, said that the move was to avert voter apathy in the coming polls in the state.

He said that it was imperative for residents of the state to be part of the political process and ensure that the right persons were elected into office.

The coordinator said the group was also galvanising full support for the re-election of Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi because of his track record of good governance.

Agu said Enugu people had enjoyed the dividends of democracy under the administration of Ugwuanyi and so had no option than to reinforce their support for his second term bid.

He said members of the group were desirous of taking the re-election message of the governor to all corners of the state because he had performed creditably well in the last three and half years.

“We are promoters of good governance and as such are committed to the re-election of Ugwuanyi, who has within the last three years shown great will and capacity to manage human and material resources.

“We have continued to mobilise residents of the state to effectively participate in the electoral process for the governorship and state assembly elections,” he said.

Agu appealed to the people to shun apathy which almost marred the previous Presidential and National Assembly elections, adding that a vote for the governor would reinforce good governance in the state.

The Patron of the group, Mr Felix Ugwu, said that by mobilising residents of the state to discharge their civic duties, members of the group had taken a bold step towards deepening democracy.

Ugwu, who is a U.S.-based management consultant, called for concerted efforts by all stakeholders to sustain the current democratic process in the country.

According to him, Nigeria is doomed for failure as a nation if its democracy comes under any threat.

“The people of the state should show their appreciation for a peaceful Enugu State, human capacity development and social infrastructure which the governor has accomplished,” Ugwu said. (NAN)
