THE Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has displayed the list of eligible voters for the councillorship by-elections scheduled for March 24.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the by-elections in Ward B (Ogunloko) in Oshodi/Isolo Local Government and Ward B (Dopemu) in Agege Local Government are to fill the vacancies resulting from the death of the councillors representing the wards.

A NAN correspondent of who visited the commission’s collation centre in Dopemu on Monday reports that some residents were seen trying to check their names on the list.

Some politicians across the different parties were also seen scanning through the list.

LASIEC Director of Public Affairs, Mr Oladapo Olatunde, confirmed to NAN that the list had also been displayed at the Oshodi centre.

He said the display of the list was in line with the election time table to enable residents to verify their eligibility.

When asked how many parties would participate in the elections, he said the commission had not determined that yet.

“For now, people are still collecting forms; by the time we are through with that, we will be able to know how many candidates and parties are participating,” he said.

NAN reports that the timetable for the elections puts March 13 as the deadline for the submission of forms by candidates.

The timetable also puts the date of the release of validated candidates for the elections as March 21.

The Chairman of the Commission,  retired Justice Ayotunde Phillips has enjoined leaders of political parties and other stakeholders in the State to cooperate with the Commission to guarantee a peaceful electoral process.

She has promised that the commission would, on its part, ensure that the elections are free, fair and credible.

NAN reports that local government elections in the state took place on July 22, 2017. (NAN)
