THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists against reckless driving during the “ember months” to reduce accidents to the barest minimum.

The FRSC Unit Commander, RS 7.17 Kuje Unit, Mr Eugene Nwabuike, gave the advice on Friday in Kuje at commencement of thos year’s ember months campaign.

Nwabuike urged motorists to maintain minimum speed and obey traffic rules and regulations during and after the ember period.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the 2022 campaign is tagged: “Avoid Speeding, Overloading and Unsafe Tyres to Arrive Alive”.

Nwabuike said the essence of the campaign was to ensure accident free celebration during the ember months as travelers would embark on journeys for the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

According to him, the 2022 ember campaign is targeted at introducing the best global road practices to the people of the area and the nation at large for safe driving.

He explained that the campaign would also educate motorists on how to safely use the road and prevent unnecessary crashes.

“The extensive public education this period is expected to produce zero crashes or zero death within the ember months and beyond in Kuje.

“We are going to carry out enforcement on all traffic rules and regulations within this period in Kuje Area Council.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility and to enjoy quality road experience, we must shun all forms of anti-safety vices relating to lawless, reckless, negligent and impatience, among others,” he said.

The FRSC unit commander said that the corps had put some measures in place to checkmate the ugly trend of excessive speeding, dangerous driving and other road vices which often resulted in road traffic crashes.

He thanked traditional rulers and sister security agencies in Kuje for their complementary roles towards achieving one common goal of nation building through safety on Nigeria’s roads.

“If motorists observe traffic rules and regulations, avoid speeding and ensure that their vehicles are in good condition before setting out, there will be little or no accidents.

“Road safety is a collective responsibility and to ensure hitch-free ember months, we must cooperate with the FRSC and shun all forms of traffic law infringement.

“It is therefore wise to maintain safe speed and embrace minimum safety standards as most road crashes are caused by human factors,” he added.

The Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Kuje branch, Alhaji Nda’ama Ismaila, appreciated FRSC for the awareness campaign in ensuring road safety in the area.

He assured that the union would always support and cooperate with the command to ensure that its members obey traffic rules and regulations for effective and functional road usage.

Stakeholders at the event included the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS), the Nigeria Police, Department of Security Services (DSS), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), NYSC, VIO, NURTW and the Nigeria Army. (NAN)
