Ember Months: FRSC boss rallies stakeholders to reduce road fatalities

SHEHU Mohammed, Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Tuesday rallied stakeholders in developing strategies to reduce road fatalities across the country.
Mohammed made the call during a news conference to unveil the 2024 Ember Months Campaign in Lokoja with theme: “Speak up Against Dangerous Driving” Crashes Kill More Passengers than Drivers”,
Mohammed, who was represented by the FRSC Kogi Sector Commander, Corps Commander Samuel Oyedeji, described the daily loss of lives and properties on the highways as “disturbing ” and “unacceptable”.
He said: “the task of ensuring a safe motoring environment in Nigeria is a crucial and collective responsibility.”
“This is why relevant stakeholders in road transportation sector are invited to work in synergy with the corps to address road carnage in the country.
“We must take proactive measures to provide hope, not fear, when using our roads. This is the consequence of our actions or inactions will be severe if we fail to address these challenges.”
Mohammed said motorists were expected to take full responsibility for their actions or inactions on the road by maintaining their vehicles, obeying traffic laws and regulations.
According to him, the corps has introduced a dynamic approach to its public education strategies aimed at changing drivers behavior and position Nigeria as a safety conscious nation in the global community.
“This strategy arose from the need to engage passengers and encourage them to assert their rights, thereby curbing drivers’ excesses more so that more passengers are killed in road traffic crashes than drivers,” he said.
The FRSC boss assured the public of the readiness of his officers and men to help reduce the road carnage within the ember Months particularly during the forthcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ember Months Campaign would be followed by a Motorcade Rally/ Road show on Wednesday and a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday in Lokoja metropolis. (NAN)
