WOMEN from the Enugwu-Ukwu Community, under the Otu Odu-Eze, wives of Enugwu-Ukwu cabinet chiefs, have donated food items, worth N5 million, to indigent widows for their Christmas celebration.
Mrs Dora Ekpeh, wife of Igwe Ralph Ekpeh, the traditional ruler of Enugwu-Ukwu Community in Njikoka Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at a community Christmas empowerment programme on Saturday.
Ekpeh, who also serves as the President of the women’s group, said that the initiative marked the fifth year of the exercise, which had supported 3,000 indigent widows in the community.
She explained that the vision behind the donation was to support their husbands in fostering a healthy, thriving community by engaging in an annual feeding charity.
The Deputy President of the group, Mrs Edith Anaekwe, emphasised that the initiative reflected their commitment to the community and their collaboration with the traditional leadership to promote economic development and family welfare.
Anaekwe added that more than 90 indigent widows from 18 villages received basic food items, such as rice, beans, and other essentials, along with N10,000 cash each.
A senior member of the group and a legal practitioner, Mrs Patricia Nkwoji, commended the initiative for bringing hope to many women in the community.
She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute and prayed for positive change in the beneficiaries’ lives.
Mrs Chinelo Ayika, another member, lauded the group’s leadership for its efforts, noting that serving humanity brings numerous blessings.
She expressed pride in being part of a group dedicated to serving the people with humility.
Beneficiaries of the donations, including Mrs Irene Nwaokolo and Mrs Ijeoma Okafor, shared their appreciation for being selected, with Okafor urging other wealthy individuals in the area to follow the example set by the group. (NAN)
