OBIORA Okafor, deputy transition committee chairman, Awka South LGA, Obiora Okafor, says ongoing demolition of illegal structures across the state is being carried out in good faith.

This is also directed at mitigating excesses of roadside street traders and consequences of their activities.

Okafor who spoke on this year’s World Environment Day celebration noted that erection of shanties on streets and in unauthorised places posed serious threat to lives of people, including defaulters. It also defaced the environment.

“Gov. Willie Obiano gave a directive to local government authorities in the state to carry out the demolition exercise to correct the excesses of those that abuse the environment,” Okafor said.

He urged die-hard street traders in front of Eke Awka Market to rent vacant shops in the market, instead of being part of the environmental challenges to the state.

Raphael Anaekwokwu, principal, Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka, called for collective action in promoting good environment.

Anaekwokwu urged Anambra government to direct its environmental agencies such as the ASWAMA to go to public schools and assist to cart away their refuse.

Principal, Comprehensive Secondary School, Awka, Christian Ezeamaku noted that a healthy environment, “helps to promote good health while an abused environment breeds early deaths and other consequences’’.
