CENTRE for Disaster and Risk Management and Development Studies (CDRM and DS), Federal University of Technology Minna, has organised a workshop on Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at Local Levels (APELL) for Mararaban Rido communities in Kaduna State.

Dr Samsideen OJoye, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the Centre said on Friday during the one-day workshop held at Chemchery Hotel, Kaduna, that the worship was aimed at enhancing the knowledge of communities to prevailing hazards surrounding them, especially the risks associated with fire.

He said “it is also aimed at educating the people about correct practices to adopt before, during and after hazards had occurred.

“The workshop, which is a project under the preparation and prevention elements of the comprehensive disaster management cycle, is one of the many ongoing initiatives that the APELL is undertaking to create safer and more resilient communities.”

Ojoye noted that at the end of the workshop, participants would be exposed to fire hazards, chemical hazards, as well as health and safety practices for the communities.

He noted that CDRM and DS would continue to undertake initiatives such as public education and community outreach programmes, including interactive sessions with the private sector, community groups and educational institutions.

“We have always affirmed that disaster preparedness and disaster risk management are the responsibilities of every individual,” he said. (NAN)
