AN environmentalist, Muhammad Yahaya, on Thursday, called for proper collection and disposal of waste to avert diseases associated with environmental pollution in Kaduna State.

Yahaya, who is the Commander, Safety Awareness and Environmental Support Initiative, an NGO, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Kaduna.

According to him, 60 per cent of flooding and other environmental problems in the metropolis are as a result of waste blocking the drains, thereby obstructing free flow of water.

“A lot of solid waste and polythene materials are generated daily in the state, almost a thousand metric tonnes weekly.

“The problem is that the waste is not properly collected, and it scatters all over the place and ends up inside the drains and water channels when it rains,” he said.

The environmentalist urged the state government to put in place necessary measures, in order to end indiscriminate disposal of waste particularly, polythene materials.

He said that polythene and sachet water companies should be made to pay for clearing water ways in the state.

Yahaya said that the government should see waste management as a resource, and create the enabling environment for the private sector to come in.

He, however, commended the state government for ensuring proper disposal of waste, and enjoined residents to play their part by managing waste appropriately.

He called on the public to avoid indiscriminate waste disposal, to curb environmental related diseases. (NAN)
