EU, Argentina to discuss ‘safe, fair’ food supply chains

TOP EU diplomat Josep Borrell and Argentinian Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero had discussed strengthening supply chains between the bloc and the South American country amid high energy and food prices in Europe.
The diplomats discussed the strategic role food and energy production play, according to a statement released after the meeting in Buenos Aires.
Argentina’s potential role as a provider of clean energy, food and strategically important raw materials.
On Thursday, ministers of foreign affairs from the EU and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) will take place in Buenos Aires, four years after their previous joint meeting.
“The cooperation between CELAC and the EU is very important in these uncertain times,’’ Cafiero said.
He added that together “we can build safe and fair supply chains.’’
Borrell advocated for the implementation of the free-trade agreement with the Mercosur states in South America, which is currently on hold.
Negotiators agreed on the deal in 2019, but the ratification process has stalled.
The EU is one of Argentina’s most important trading partners.
Most foreign direct investment in the South American country comes from the EU.
