THE European Union’s commissioner for jobs and social rights, Nicolas Schmit, has warned of a potential social crisis after the coronavirus pandemic.
Although there has been no dramatic increase in unemployment figures so far, the prospects for young people, in particular, are not rosy, Schmit pointed out in an interview with dpa.
He noted that a policy was needed to ensure that the people do not slide into a new social crisis after the pandemic.
Schmit is due to present an action plan for a more social Europe together with EU Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis on Thursday.
The plan is to ensure that the so-called Pillar of Social Rights, launched by the European Commission in 2017, is implemented in Europe.
The initiative seeks to deliver new social rights and improve existing social rights for people across Europe and serves as the EU’s compass to achieve better working and living conditions in the bloc.
It comprises various principles on common minimum standards, including fair wages, assistance in the event of unemployment, health care or long-term care. (dpa/NAN)
