EUROPEAN Union (EU) countries have planned to supply Ukraine with one million rounds of artillery ammunition over the next 12 months, EU diplomats told dpa on Monday.

The countries are to immediately deliver ammunition from their own existing stocks to the war-torn country.

Additionally, EU member states are to jointly purchase more 155 mm calibre shells within the next six months to support Ukraine in the longer term.

EU countries would partly be reimbursed for their ammunition deliveries through an EU fund which has served in the past months to finance arms deliveries to Kyiv.

Initial plans foresaw a total of 2 billion euros (2.1 billion dollars) to be made available for ammunition support for Kyiv.

The agreement came over concerns that Ukraine could run short of important types of ammunition in
the near future. (dpa/NAN)
