THE European Medicines Agency (EMA) is expected to give the green light on Friday for children ages 12 and upwards to receive the BioNTech/Pfizer Coronavirus vaccine.

The responsible expert committee will hold an extraordinary meeting on Friday, the EMA said on Wednesday, adding that the decision would be announced afterward.

Approval for the age group is considered certain, however.

German company BioNTech and U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer had applied for an extension of the vaccine’s approval in the bloc to include children between ages 12 and 15.

So far, the jab has only been approved in the EU for those aged 16 and up.

The U.S. and Canada have already expanded the emergency use authorization for the BioNTech/Pfizer jab to include children.

According to the manufacturers, studies have shown the vaccine to have high efficacy and tolerability in children.

Of the four jabs approved in the EU so far, none has yet been approved for children. (dpa/NAN)
