Ex-Dutch international Promes ordered to pay for stabbing cousin
Sports
A Dutch court on Tuesday ordered former Ajax and Netherlands international winger Quincy Promes to pay compensation to his cousin after stabbing him in the leg in 2020.
The 32-year-old, who now plays for Spartak Moscow, had already been sentenced to 18 months in jail for the attack at a birthday party over a stolen necklace.
The compensation amount will be specified at a later date. Lawyers for the cousin have reportedly claimed around one million euros ($1.1 million) but the final amount is likely to be lower.
Promes has not appeared in court, and attempts to extradite him from Russia have failed. He had denied the charges and appealed at every stage.
Amid doubts over whether he will pay, a villa Promes bought while he was playing for Ajax has been seized.
The investigation into the stabbing was triggered by intercepted wiretaps from a separate case involving Promes and drug smuggling.
The winger was charged in May with importing several hundred kilogrammes of cocaine through the Belgian port of Antwerp in 2020.
Prosecutors have called for a nine-year jail sentence in that case. The verdict is due on February 14.
Promes won 50 caps, scoring seven goals, and was part of the national team at the Euro 2020 championships, which was played in 2021 due to Covid; But has not worn the orange jersey since.
He joined Amsterdam’s Ajax in 2019 from Sevilla in a 15-million-euro transfer, before going back to Spartak in 2021.
6th February, 2024.
