FAMILY, neighbours and other mourners could not hold emotions and tears as they watched the remains of Shuaibu Amodu, Technical Director of Nigeria Football Federation and former Super Eagles coach, being lowered into the grave. The event held at the residence of Amodu at Okpella in Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State on Saturday, June 11.

Amodu’s body was brought into his residence in Okpella at about 12:30pm Saturday from the Stella Obasanjo Hospital in Benin. It was later laid for funeral rites at about 5:07pm.

At about 4:00pm, Amodu’s mother, who had earlier been taken to the palace of the Okuokpellagbe of Okpella, A.Y.E. Dirisu, after she was informed of her son’s death, returned to the compound. Before the funeral rites began, a special prayer, led by cleric Ahmed Shehu was offered for the repose of the soul of the late soccer coach.

Shehu described Amodu’s demise as a great loss to Okpella community, the Etsako nationality, Edo State and Nigeria at large. At about 5:10pm, another funeral prayer for the late Amodu held shortly before he was finally interred five minutes later.

Members of the Nigerian football community, led by Mohammed Sanusi, secretary general of the NFF; Chairman of the Edo Football Association, Frank Ilaboya; a physiotherapist of the national football team, Robinson Okosun as well as other football and sports enthusiasts were in Okpella to pay Amodu their last respects.

Top officials of the government of Edo State including Amodu’s cousin, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Kassim Afegbua; Commissioner for Environment, Clement Agba; and other notable personalities from the community, the state and outside the state were joined by hundreds of residents of Okpella to bid the former coach farewell.

Amodu is survived by his wife, Kuburat, and seven children; as well as his mother, brother and sisters.
