AN architect, James Yahana, has called for regular maintenance of public buildings and facilities to avoid incessant collapses and other safety threats.
The architect who is based in Akwanga Local Government Area of Nasarawa State made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lafia.
According to him, regular maintenance will afford the facilities managers the opportunity to detect any fault early enough and correct it before it becomes a threat to life.
Yahana also called on the public to hire the services of qualified architects and engineers, and to ensure that standard was maintained to avoid incessant collapse of structures.
“Relevant authorities in the building and housing sector should ensure proper monitoring and supervision of activities of professionals and enforce adherence to ethics.
“The agencies of government should make sure all buildings especially large structures follow due process and get the necessary approval before construction is allowed,” he added.
Commenting on the recent incident where an elevator collapsed and led to a death of a medical doctor in Lagos, the expert advised facility managers to ensure regular maintenance of elevators to protect lives.
“It is important for anybody using elevator to feel safe and secure while using it.
“Incidents of trappings of people while using the elevator and malfunctioning of the machine would be avoided if the technicians were engaged to carry out appropriate maintenance and repairs regularly,” he said. (NAN)
