A Bauchi-based veterinarian, Dr Shehu Zailani has called for regular vaccination of dogs to stem spread of rabies.

He said this on Saturday in Bauchi while reacting to the 2024 World Rabies Day celebration.

The theme of the day is: “Breaking Rabies Boundaries,” highlighting the need for collective action to prevent and control the disease.

According to Zailani, rabies is a viral infection caused by the raptor virus, spread through infected dogs, adding that the disease could be controlled through vaccination

“Rabies remains a significant public health concern particularly due to its zoonotic potential.

“The virus can be transmitted through the bite or saliva of an infected dog, contaminating open wounds or mucous membrane,” he said.

He advised dogs keepers to vaccinate their pets regularly against rabies to safeguard public health, and urged stakeholders to unite towards attaining zero rabies goal by 2030.

“Together, we can break the boundaries of rabies and protect both animals and human from this deadly virus.” (NAN).
