Expert canvases data privacy education

A Cyber Security Expert, Oluwafemi Osho, has called on relevant stakeholders to ensure that data privacy education trickles down to every sector of the populace.
Osho gave the advice on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
He said that with the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA), it was imperative to educate every member of the society on the need for data privacy.
NAN reports that Data privacy is the protection of personal information from those who should not have access to it and the ability of individuals to determine who can access their personal information.
It is also an aspect of data protection that addresses the proper storage, access, retention, immutability and security of sensitive data.
The expert said that Nigeria participation in the recently celebrated Global Privacy Day on Jan. 28 and engagement of other forms of awareness creation might not be sufficient to educate Nigerians.
“Despite these efforts to raise awareness about data privacy, there seems to be a gap in reaching citizens with minimal or no Information Technology (IT) knowledge.
“While IT and cyber security professionals show a significant level of awareness and understanding, the general populace, especially those not versed in digital literacy remain largely uninformed.
“This discrepancy highlights the necessity for targeted educational campaigns and initiatives specifically designed to bridge the knowledge gap.
“Ensuring that data privacy education is accessible and understandable to all, regardless of their IT background.
“Tailoring communication strategies to cater to a broader audience can help in making data privacy knowledge more widespread among the general public, fostering a more privacy-conscious society,” he said.
Osho, however, recommended that the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) could broaden the scope of national awareness campaigns through engaging other relevant stakeholders.
He added that the campaigns could involve the television, radio, social media, and other platforms for a wider reach of audience.
“The government can incorporate data privacy education into the national curriculum at various levels of education and ensure that citizens understand the importance of data privacy from a young age.
“Workshops, seminars, and webinars can also be organised for adults to cover topics like safe internet practices and understanding one’s data rights.
“Collaboration between the government and private sector can enhance the reach and effectiveness of data privacy education,’’ Osho said.
According to him, companies, especially those in technology and telecommunications, can play a crucial role in educating their customers about data privacy through regular communications.
He said that the communication platforms could include emails, messages on data usage policies and tips for protecting personal information.
The cyber expert urged government to engage community leaders and influencers to spread the awareness to make the message more relatable and trustworthy.
“Local events and community-driven initiatives can address specific privacy concerns relevant to different groups within Nigeria,’’ he said. (NAN)
