AN Abeokuta-based security expert, Mr Paul Ayeni, has urged blacksmiths in the country not to indulge in illegal fabrication of firearms.

He said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abeokuta on Thursday, that such practice would lead to proliferation of firearms.

Ayeni, a retired commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, said it had become crucial to closely monitor and regulate the activities of blacksmiths.

”It is important to regulate local production of arms. With regulated access to firearms, there will be less crime in the society.

”Criminal gangs leverage on locally produced arms to carry out their nefarious activities, so regulation is important,” he said.

Ayeni urged security agencies to be more deliberate in checking the activities of blacksmiths to tackle local production of arms.

”This will help to reduce the rising wave of crime around the country because arms won’t be in the hand of people illegally.

”We need to take this message to the rural communities. Residents should report illegal arms producers to security agencies for prompt actions,” he said. NAN
