AN Abuja-based Consultant Pathologist, Dr Ike Okonkwo, on Monday in Abuja, said that early treatment was the best way to cure leprosy.
Okonkwo, a consultant with the Maitama District Hospital, Abuja, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that leprosy could be completely cured if the sufferer commenced treatment early enough.
NAN reports that Okonkwo spoke in commemoration of the World Leprosy Day, celebrated annually on Jan. 29.
The consultant pathologist described leprosy as a chronic infectious disease which predominantly affects the skin, peripheral nerves, respiratory tract mucosa and eyes.
”Leprosy is a curable disease. Its spread can be controlled through early treatment and adherence to recommended preventive measures,” he said.
He further said that the causative bacteria could be transmitted via droplets from the nose and mouth through close and frequent contact with untreated patients.
“The symptoms are pale hypopigmented or reddish skin patches with definite loss of sensation.
“Another is thickened or enlarged peripheral nerves with associated loss of sensation,” he said.
According to Okonkwo, leprosy is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacteria Leprae and a neglected tropical disease that is present in 120 countries.
He said that Nigeria records no fewer than 10,000 new cases every year.
The medical expert urged sufferers to seek early treatment to avoid permanent disability.(NAN)
