Information and Communications Telecommunications (ICT) experts on Friday urged the Federal government to come up with policies that would encourage local hosting of server.
The experts made the appeal at the .ng Media College organised by the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NIRA) in Lagos.
Mr Muhammed Rudman, President, NIRA in his address “Understanding the DNS Industry and Local Hosting”, said that hosting outside could have negative implications.
Rudman said that the implications of hosting locally, ranged from economic, legal, security and other implications.
According to him, by hosting abroad, the country is making money for other nations and information about the country are readily made available to the country hosting the server.
“Money is lost, Data centres are losing; there is no data sovereignty and the end users are paying more money.
“There are business opportunities if you register on .ng and your business is going global,” Rudman said.
According to him, 4.4 billion were connected on the Internet and Nigeria is ranked 7th in terms of Internet users with 111.3 million users.
He said that with the high Internet users, the cost of Internet was still expensive, saying that this was attributed to hosting abroad.
He, however, urged media practitioners to be advocates of the .ng domain name and the relevance and benefits.
Also speaking at the Media College, Mr Toba Obaniyi, Vice President, NIRA, said that .ng domain was more secured.
Obaniyi who spoke on the topic “Domain Name Business: Benefits of Using the .Ng ccTLD”, said that the .ng was more secured due to the involvement of the Police.
He said that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was involved to fight cyber crime.
According to him, registering the domain name has its benefits because there are a lot to select from.
“There are several options on .ng and you can be creative on it,” Obaniyi said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NIRA is a Not-For-Profit multi- stakeholders’ membership based organisation.
The one-day .NG Media College is aimed at encouraging creativity and discourse on the Domain Name Industry. (NAN)
